FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Students who have studied a language in junior high school may be placed at level 2 and upon completion of the four yearhigh school program will receive credit at the fifth level of the language. In some instances, completion of two years of studyof the same language meets the entrance requirement for colleges and universities. Language requirements for entrance tospecific colleges and universities can be obtained from the high school counselor. While it is recommended that languagestudy begin at grade 9, students may begin to study a language at any time. NOTE: ***6.0 Level Grading

 

733 SPANISH 1

Grades 9-12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: None.

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture with an emphasis on understanding and speaking thelanguage in controlled situations. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are developed. The acquisition of a limited vocabulary and knowledge of elementary grammar are included. Insight into Hispanic culture (geography, cross-cultural differences, and current events) is also provided. A variety of supplementary activities, including language lab activities as well as a relevant text, provide an enjoyable and valuable learning experience. [NCAA Approved]

 

735 SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS

Grades 9-12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: None

This course is especially designed to develop the student's proficiency in reading and writing. The student will be exposed to a thorough review of grammatical structures. His/her vocabulary will be broadened through intensive reading, and considerable attention will be given to creative writing, correct oral presentations, and language lab activities.[NCAA Approved]

 

736 SPANISH 2

Grades 9-12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 733 or Equivalent

In this course further development and expansion of the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills that were introduced in Spanish 1. Writing, reading for comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, cultural awareness, career awareness, and learning and study skills are given increased emphasis. A variety of supplementary activities and materials, including language lab activities as well as a relevant text, are utilized. [NCAA Approved]

 

737 SPANISH 2 FAST

Grades 9-12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 733 or Equivalent

In this course further development and expansion of basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills learned in Spanish1 are acquired at a more rapid pace than expected in the Spanish 2 average course. More emphasis is placed on understanding the language spoken at normal speed in a non-structured situation; speaking freely on subjects pertaining to daily life; developing composition skills; and becoming more aware of the Hispanic world through its literature, history and the arts. A variety of supplementary activities and materials, including language lab activities as well as a relevant text, are utilized. [NCAA Approved]

 

738 SPANISH 3

Grades 10-12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 735 or 736

This course provides a continuation of Spanish 2 designed for those students who wish to expand their knowledge of grammatical concepts essential to the mastery of the Spanish language, and who wish to reinforce the skills introduced in Spanish 1 and 2. Added emphasis is placed on developing composition skills and speaking the language in non-structured situations, including language lab activities. Literature, the arts, and history are introduced. [NCAA Approved]

 

739 SPANISH 3 FAST

Grades 10-12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 735, 736 or 737

This course provides a continuation of Spanish 2 designed for those students who wish to develop a high degree of communicative competency, both written and oral. The same grammatical concepts presented in Spanish 3 Average are presented in Spanish 3 Fast, but at an accelerated pace. Increased supplementary readings and mini-units will be introduced, and considerable attention will be given to creative writing and oral presentations in Spanish, as well as cross-cultural comparisons, and including language lab activities. 740 SPANISH 4

Grades 11, 12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 738 or 739

This course provides a study of a variety of literary periods and styles of Hispanic literature with an emphasis on oral communication. Novels, plays, poetry, and contemporary short stories are studied, giving the student more advanced insight into Hispanic civilization and literature. A systematic grammar review is provided at this level. Continued emphasis is placed on developing composition skills. Opportunities may be provided for students to pursue their own interests through special projects, including language lab activities. [NCAA Approved]

 

741 SPANISH 4 FAST

Grades 11, 12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 738 or 739

The goals of this course include having students attain a high degree of competency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The student is introduced to a variety of literary periods and styles of Hispanic literature. Novels, plays, poetry and contemporary short stories are studied giving the student more advanced insight into Hispanic civilization and literature. It includes a general review of grammar. More materials is covered and at a faster rate than in a Spanish 4 average class. [NCAA Approved]

 

742 SPANISH 5

Grades 11, 12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 740 or 741

Further study of Spanish and Spanish American civilization largely through reading fiction (short stories, novels, plays), with some non-fiction and poetry. Grammar is reviewed, and speaking and understanding skills are developed further. Opportunities afforded in Spanish 4 for supplementary studies and/or special interest projects are also available in Spanish 5. Students may become actively involved in community projects such as working in area education programs. [NCAA Approved]

 

743 SPANISH 5 FAST OR AP***

Grades 11, 12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: 739 or 741, 738 or 740 With Consent of Instructor

This course is designed to prepare students for the AP examination as well as college entrance examinations. Students in this course are submitted to a strict and intensive regimen of practice of speaking, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and writing. They learn to write well planned compositions on a variety of subjects. Students participate regularly in discussions of current events and ideas, as well as continue to review vocabulary used in everyday situations and study intricate grammatical structures necessary for the AP exam. [NCAA Approved]

 

744 SPANISH INDEPENDENT STUDY

Grades 11, 12 1 Year 1 Credit Prerequisite: Refer to Prerequisites for the Course at the Equivalent Level,and Consent of Instructor

This course is intended for students prevented by schedule conflicts from enrolling in regular Spanish classes. Please refer to the appropriate course description for the equivalent level.
