Sra. Cichy's Course Overview
¡Hola y bienvenidos a la clase de español! In order to make the year run smoothly for both you and me, please read and be familiar with this course description. If at any time you would like to discuss these procedures, need extra help, or want to see me for any other reason, please let me know. I will always make myself available to you. My free periods are conference, seminar, and before or after school.
No matter what your reason for taking this class, I have one goal: to teach you español. We will focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as Hispanic culture. Your learning will take place through the textbook, group work, class activities, and games. However, you are the key to your learning. If you do your work and participate regularly, you'll not only learn more, but you'll also have some fun. Participation is vital to my assessing your progress. Don't worry about making mistakes. Give your best effort, go at your own pace, and you and I will see your progress.

1. Come to class on time. You must be in the door before the bell rings. Tardiness will result in points deducted from your grade, a detention, a parent phone call, and/or a discipline referral to the Division Head or Dean.
2. Be prepared with all class materials. This includes your text, workbook, a notebook that is only used for Spanish class, a pen and pencil, a dry erase marker, and your completed homework. No passes will be given to leave the room. Arriving prepared is part of your participation grade.
3. No food, beverages, gum, radios, calculators, translators, hats, or coats.
4. Behave. If your behavior is going to hurt, anger, or upset another student or myself don't do it. Consequences for inappropriate behavior include being asked to leave the room, points deducted from your grade, detentions, parent phone calls, and/or discipline referrals.
1. Please be aware that you are expected to keep a Spanish notebook. Notes should be dated and taken everyday in this notebook and should include vocabulary, grammar, and culture notes. Your notebook may be collected and count for a grade.
2. You will most likely receive homework every class meeting. Sometimes it will be collected and corrected, other times you will correct your own in class. Your homework will collectively count as a 100 point grade. You will receive 5 points for each assignment that is complete. No credit will be given for incomplete or late work. If your homework is not complete, you may be asked to stay after school that afternoon until 3:20 to finish your homework and/or discuss study skills with me.
3. If I do not assign homework, you should still spend 15-20 minutes every night reviewing the material covered in class. Trust me, it's worth it! In the long run you'll remember more and learn more, and the material will seem easier if you learn it little by little instead of the night before the test.
4. Freshmen are required to write down assignments in an assignment notebook.
III. Absences and Make-up Work
1. Because classes are ninety minutes this year, attendance is twice as important and missed work is twice as difficult to make up. When you are absent, you are responsible for the missed work. Don't expect me to chase you down. It is your responsibility to check with your classmates to get the notes and find out your missed assignments. You should have the name and phone number of a classmate whom you can call during an absence.
2. For an excused absence, you have two days to make up missed assignments, quizzes, and tests. The day you return to school is considered the first day of the make-up period, even if we don't have class. You MUST come see me during the day BETWEEN class meetings to find out what you missed, turn in work that was due the day of your absence, and make up quizzes or tests. This way, you will be caught up and ready to go when class meets the following day. If you delay, you may receive a zero for your missed work. Please see me to make arrangements for extended absences.
3. For an unexcused absence, you must make up the work to meet course outcomes. However, NO CREDIT will be given towards your grade. Cuts and truancies will be referred to the Dean, and will result in points deducted from your participation grade.
4. If you are absent the class before a test/quiz but were present when the test/quiz was announced, you are expected to take the test/quiz providing no new material was covered during your absence.
1. You will receive a participation grade based upon your frequency of participation, being on task, bringing all materials to class everyday, arriving before the bell, and attempting to use Spanish to communicate. Participation grades will be evaluated every unit.
2. If you are caught cheating, copying, or assisting someone to cheat on an assignment, quiz, or test, you will receive a zero. Talking during a test or quiz will result in a zero or points deducted from your grade, even if you have already turned in your test or quiz.
3. No credit is earned for work that is turned in late, incomplete, illegible, without a name, or done in red ink.
4. Your quarter and semester grades will be calculated approximately as follows:
Tests 45%Quizzes and other assignments 40%
Homework and Participation 15%
* The final exam is cumulative and will count approximately 15% of your grade. If you fail the final your semester grade will be lowered by one letter grade.
5. The grading scale is as follows:
90-100% A80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
59% F
¡Buena Suerte!
