Richard W. Amundsen
Class of 1980

1980 1996

Richard W. Amundsen received his A.S. Degree from Harper College in 1982 and an A.A. in 1983. He then went on to receive a B.S. in Business Administration from Elmhurst College in l987. During this time, Richard worked for Digital Equipment and became a Project Specialist on a team to explore the area of management consultation for the company.

After a nine-year corporate career, Richard felt a strong desire to serve his community and became a Rolling Meadows Police Officer. Serving as a patrolman for three and a half years, he was appointed Crime Prevention/Community Relations Officer in 1993. He became a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Office and in this capacity has taught thousands of school children how to say no to drugs and violence.

In Richard’s role as Crime Prevention Officer, he is the police liaison to senior citizens, writes a monthly article which appears in their newsletter, and gives safety seminars. He also teaches drug prevention education to parents and is a leader in Awana Youth Groups.

Philip G. Martin
Class of 1978

1978 1996

Philip G. Martin was an excellent student throughout his academic career despite a hearing loss. He earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Science at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1988 after receiving his B.S. and M.S. in Ceramic Engineering from the same university. In addition, he was admitted to Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Keramos Honor Societies.

Publishing widely in his field, Philip holds three patents and has ten applications pending. Since earning his doctorate, Philip has worked for 3M where he is Polymer Engineering Specialist in the Home and Commercial Care Division.

Active in community projects, Philip was a Bible Fellowship leader for two years at St. John’s Chapel and served as a cook for Koinonia retreats at least twice a year. He has served as a volunteer mentor for University of Illinois undergraduates, helping them make decisions about careers in the field of science. Philip’s main hobby is flying high power rockets. He wrote and published a quarterly newsletter from his Minnesota home and speaks to local schools and Boy Scout Troops.
