Steven T. Isoye
Class of 1981

1981 1999

Steven graduated magna cum laude from Northern Illinois University with a major in biology and continued his education at Concordia University, earning an M.S. in curriculum and instruction in 1985. His teaching career began at Loyola Academy in Wilmette and at The Latin School in Chicago. In the summer of 1991, he taught at Loyola University in Chicago in the Hispanic Alliance enrichment programs for inner city minority students. Steven then moved to the public school arena teaching chemistry at Warren Township High School and Deerfield High School and is presently head of the science department at Highland Park High School.

Steven has been a presenter at the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, Lake County Educational Service Center, the National Science Teachers Association Area Convention, and at numerous workshops for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. He was involved in revising science standards for the Illinois State Board of Education.

Professional honors include Educator of The Year at Loyola Academy, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Tandy Corporation Outstanding Teacher Award for Math/Science at Warren High School, Illinois Science Teachers’ Association Award of Excellence in Secondary Science Teaching in 1993 and 1995, Outstanding Young Man of America, and the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. One of Steven’s greatest achievements is being named 1998 Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Elizabeth A. Shaughnessy
Class of 1977

1977 1999
Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Elizabeth earned her B.S. in Biology in 1981. She then received her M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed her surgical residency at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. Her training continued with a fellowship in surgical oncology at the City of Hope National Medical Center in California. Elizabeth is currently Surgeon and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Professional honors include a grant from the National Cancer Institute, the Joan and Ray Kroc Academic Scholar Award for Residents, Charles A. Schiff Resident Award for Compassionate Patient Care, and Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Additionally, Elizabeth was an AMWA physician mentor for medical students, published many articles in medical journals, and presented to numerous professional societies.

One of Elizabeth’s greatest achievements was helping to organize the Los Angeles area inaugural Race for the Cure to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in which 4,000 runners raised over $100,000. She also chaired the foundation’s Speaker’s Bureau and the Local Grants Committee and was a member of the Founding Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. Elizabeth continues her philanthropic work with the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
