F.A.Q. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE TECH CREW?

The Tech Crew is the Rolling Meadows High School stage crew.  The Tech Crew is a sizable community of trained and training technicians who provide artistic and technical services for numerous productions and events at RMHS each year. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend. There is more than enough work to go around. The people are nice, the work is interesting and fun, and we listen to music.

WHAT DOES THE CREW DO?

Crew is a learning environment. Through hands-on student and teacher directed lessons and projects, the Tech Crew:

Builds and paints sets and scenery

Creates and acquires props

Hangs light plots with conventional & intelligent lighting

Programs and operates computerized lighting systems

Creates & edits sound effects and soundtracks

Works with microphones, recording & playback

& much more…

WHERE/WHEN DOES IT MEET?

The Tech Crew meets daily from 2:45 - 6:00 p.m. in the Theater.  There is a 4:30 p.m. bus and a 6:00 p.m. bus for students who do not drive.

WHO MAY JOIN?

All members of the student body of Rolling Meadows High School are welcome to join. The Crew is made up of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Any RMHS student who contributes to the technical aspects of a RMHS event is considered a Tech Crew member and is provided a program credit.  The Tech Crew does many performances each year. It is common for students on crew to work many shows a year. Students may choose which shows they wish to work. Shows occur over roughly 6 week periods.

HOW DO I JOIN?

To join the Tech Crew, just show up, introduce yourself, and get to work. Students will be granted a tour of the facilities and a briefing on the safety procedures. We are a welcoming group. You will quickly get to work and feel right at home.

To work backstage or in the booth, you will need to sign-up and commit.

HOW OFTEN MUST I ATTEND?

Stage Crew members are urged to attend as frequently as possible. Non-differentiated crew members are not required to attend daily.

Stage Crew Heads are expected to attend daily.

The more you attend, the more you learn, the more you are known and trusted and the more likely you are to be chosen for greater responsibility.

WHO IS IN CHARGE?

The Tech Crew for plays and musical productions is run by Eric Garneau, the Technical Director. Theater is intensively collaborative. Each year we work side by side with multiple Technical Directors for various events and major stage productions.  In addition to the adult Technical Directors, the Stage Crew is uniquely student lead. Each production is driven forward by the leadership of teams of students called Crew Heads. Crew Heads are chosen from the body of the crew and are chosen to lead specific areas of the production.

CAN I JUST DO LIGHTS?

Crew members are expected to willingly participate in all activities. No student is exempt from lights, nor from painting or any other task. All tasks are necessary learning experiences. The more you learn, the more opportunity you have to prove your talents and to be given greater responsibility in specific areas of Technical Theatre.
