Library Orientation 2006 - 2007

LOGGING ON:

Name:  Type your last name in lowercase letters followed by your ID number.  Do NOT
             put a space between your name and ID #.  (Example:  taylor709203)

Password:  Type your birth date in 6 digits.  Do NOT use slashes or spaces between the
                    numbers.  (Example:   072684)

ITEMS AND APPLICATIONS:

  1. Open Macintosh HD.
  2. At left side of window, open Applications.
  1. Scroll down to and click once on MSO 2004 to open the folder.
  2. Double-click on MSW 2004.
  3. Create a Microsoft Word document.  At the top right corner of the page, type your NAME, TEACHER, BLOCK # and DATE.  This will be your answer page.  Name and Save your new document (in Documents Folder) IMMEDIATELY.
  4. Click on the Finder icon (blue face) in your dock to return to Applications.
  5. Scroll down to and open Safari.
  6. Click on View in the menu bar then click on ‘Home’.   ‘Home’ MUST have a check mark next to it to continue.
  7. Enter ‘d214.org’ into the address bar to get to the District 214 Homepage.
  8. Click on ‘Our School Websites’ then ‘Rolling Meadows High School’ website.
  9. Click on ‘Library’ to get to the RMHS Library Homepage.  Set the Library Homepage as your personal homepage.   [Choose Preferences from the Safari menu and click General. Click Set to Current Page.]                                                                                                       

 

FIND A BOOK:

  1. Click on 214 Library Resources then click on District 214 Online Catalog.
  2.  At right side of screen, change LIBRARY menu from ALL to RMHS.
  3.  In the search box, type in the book title, The Namesake.  Click on TITLE.
  4. Question #1:  What is the author’s name?  Copy and paste the answer to your Word Document answer page.  (Use the F9 key to return to your Word Document.)  Quick-save your answer.  (Hold down the Apple key and type ‘s’).
  5. Click on the Home icon at the top of the Safari window and return to the RMHS Library Homepage.

 

FIND A MAGAZINE ARTICLE:

  1. Click on 214 Library Resources.
  2. Under ‘Magazines, Reference, etc.’ click on Student Resource Center.
  3.  In the search bar, enter the word “immigration” then click on SEARCH.
  4.  Question #2:  Once you have opened any article about immigration, copy and paste the TITLE of the article to your Word Document answer page.  Quick-save your answer!
  5.  Click on the Home icon at the top of the Safari window and return to the RMHS    Library Homepage.

 

FIND A PHOTO ONLINE:

  1.  Click on 214 Library Resources.
  2.  Click on Biography Resource CenterIn search bar, type in the name:     Sanger, Margaret.  Then click on Search.
  3.  Question #3:  Copy and paste Ms. Sanger’s photo from this site to your answer page.  Hold down the “control” key and click on the photo.  Remember to use the “Paste Special…” option in the Edit menu.  Quick-save!
  4.  Return to the RMHS Library Homepage.
  5.  Click on 214 Library Resources.

 

SEARCH FOR LITERATURE:

  1.  Under ‘Literature’ click on Litfinder.
  2.  Under Basic Search, type in the name:  Fink, Jonathan.  Enter.
  3.  Click on any TITLE of a poem by JONATHAN FINK.
  4.  Answer #4:  Copy and paste the FIRST LINE of the Jonathan Fink poem onto your answer page.  Quick-save!
  5.  Return to the RMHS Library Homepage.

 

FIND A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE:

  1.  Under ‘Newspapers’ click on Chicago Tribune.  In the search bar, type and enter, Olmert.
  2.  Answer #5:  Copy and paste the TITLE OF ANY ARTICLE about Olmert onto your answer page.  Quick-save!

 

TYPE YOUR ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

  1.  Answer #6:  What is the FIRST thing you do when you enter the library?
  2.  Answer #7:  Which newspapers are available in the library?  (Name all 4.)
  3.  Answer #8:  For how long may you checkout a magazine?
  4. Answer #9:  What is your principal’s name?
  5.  Print out your answer sheet and bring it to the front desk.
  6.  Quit all programs by holding down the ‘option’ key and the ‘apple’ key while typing the letter ‘Q’.  Logout.  (Click on the blue apple in the top left corner and drag arrow down to ‘logout’.)   NEVER shut down the computer.
